How to Become a Hemodialysis Technician
Patients who have to undergo kidney dialysis rely on the care and expertise of dialysis technicians during their treatments. Dialysis technicians operate and maintain the equipment used in patient treatments and apply their skills to ensure the safety of their patients and provide the support they need to stay comfortable during treatment.

Course:
The Certified Hemodialysis Technician (HDT) Training program is a course which requires 310 hours of State mandated training and will be offered Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for seven weeks. The Outpatient Hemodialysis Clinical training portion of the program is three weeks with varying hours. The clinical hours are established by the Dialysis facility at where you are training.

Have or obtain a high school diploma or GED
A high school education is the minimum requirement to enroll in a professional HDT
training program.

Complete a state-approved HDT training program
Complete Odyssey Educational Center's Certified Hemodialysis Technician course. Registered with Michigan state’s board of department of health.

Pass your state’s approved HDT competency exam
State-required HDT competency exams are administered by third-party providers.
Passing the exam places your name on your state’s registry of HDT, licensed hemodialysis technician.

Find a job
Certified HDT's are in demand. Consider your career goals, professional
preferences, and lifestyle when determining where to start your job search. You’ll likely be able to choose between full-time and part-time options in both clinical and non-clinical settings.

Maintain your HDT certification
The requirements necessary to maintain your HDT certification vary by state. You may have to prove you
worked a specific number of hours as a HDT in the two years preceding your renewal date. Some states also have continuing education requirements.
